What advice would you give to the host/hostess of the party?

Robert Smith
Know who YOU are. And if you can’t figure that out---a least get a good read on your guests. So many hosts burden themselves with busy work during their party. Stop! Be available and entertaining for your guests. You’re why they came, so enjoy your time with them.

What are some ways to ensure a successful party?

Smith
Get help. Whether you are throwing a party for 6 or 600 my job is to creatively bring the host’s vision to life. I like to use the available resources. Have a great house? Skip the extensive décor. Are you a closet gourmet? Show off and make your special dish. Working with a good event planner should free you to enjoy the planning stages as much as the event.

How can you make your party different from all the others?

Smith
Pay attention to details. For example select nice stationery for your invitation- it’s the first impression- it will excite and intrigue your audience. Use special and non-traditional linens, glassware and serving dishes.
Get creative! If the setting allows, have unique transportation to take guests from the parking area to the entrance, like a carriage, a double-decker bus or a sleigh ride. Carry your decor theme throughout your entire venue and don’t forget your bathrooms. And last but not least, give a special gift to each guest as they leave to commemorate the evening.

Good guests are essential for a successful party. What makes a good guest?

Smith
The key to celebrating in style isn’t limited to the host, the guests play a big role in the success of a party, so do your part. If you are going to a party at someone’s home bring a gift. A nice bottle of wine or a bouquet of seasonal flowers are always appropriate.
Another important aspect of being a good guest is to contribute to the party conversations. Read up on the current events but keep it light- who wants a heated political debate at a holiday party. And at the very least be gracious. No matter how simple and effortless the host makes the night seem it has taken a lot time and work to throw the fabulous party and a courteous guest shows their appreciation with a personal thank you note.

Offer some final tips for throwing a special party?

Smith
Whether I’m working in a SoHo Loft, Montana Barn, West Side Museum or a home the goal always remains the same, keep it fresh, keep it clean and most important, keep it memorable.
So from all of us to all of you, have a wonderful Holiday Season
and a very Happy New Years!
And don’t forget to Celebrate in Style!
